In which I celebrate my new MA

3rd June 2011 (14:10)

This post is pure self-indulgence to celebrate that I'm now a Master of Arts. \o/ And it was the easiest academic qualification I've ever attained. :) A few weeks ago I just sent off an application form and some money, and today I picked up from the post office an official certificate entitling me to put the letters MA after my name. And yes, it's from a proper university.

I understand that the more new-fangled institutions - those founded after the 13th century AD - expect you to pass exams and stuff before they give you an MA, but Oxford and Cambridge still do it the traditional way.

In the original mediaeval universities, to become a member of the University Corporation (and thus entitled to teach there and to vote in its governing body) you had to both pass an academic test and also prove you were a decent, mature and honourable individual - which was formalised into passing the BA exam, then going at least another four years while proving you were of good character etc. At the end of that time you were made into a Master of Arts, in much the same way a craftsman was made a Master Craftsman by his guild.

Other universities later on turned the MA into a proper degree with exams and tests and so on, but Oxford and Cambridge kept the old system where you can convert a BA into an MA simply by letting time elapse, and then formally requesting it. Which I just did, mostly because a few friends were planning on doing the same and I'm a sheep. :)

Are we talking about the vampire Master or the Time Lord Master here? But yes, you may address me as Master if you wish. :)

Thanks!

Well, I got my original BA degree fair and square the more usual way! (I would have said "more traditional way", but since Oxford's been doing it that way for about 800 years, I think it counts as equally traditional. ;))

And thanks. :)

wtf

This is weirdest thing I've heard in days. Congratulations.
I'm glad I didn't have to prove I was of good character to get my Masters. ;)

Sounds like a plan. I take it I'm buying?

Even at Oxford they expect you to study for a doctorate. :(

Congratulations! Is it in English or another subject? I'd like to get an MA English someday.

Thanks! It's actually in Modern History (thought while the emphasis of the course was on the 19th and 20th century, it did cover earler times as well.) I'm afraid to say I've never really been able to enjoy "proper" literature, so a degree in English spent reading and analysing it wouldn't have been much fun for me.

Grrr. *points at her actual MA, gained with sweat and tears and blood*

Or something.

Letters after the name are always fun. I need two more to have more letters after than before my surname, and I continue to plot possible routes to this Very Important Goal. I've got time.

Enjoy, Magister.

Hey! My MA is an actual one too. Sort of. Kinda. :)

You've either got a heck of a lot of middle names or you're not counting the abbreviation for the awarding university...

(I've got to decide if I want to write it as MA (Oxon), which is traditional, or MA Oxf which is the University's new official guideline because Latin is old-fashioned or something. Hmm.)

Enjoy, Magister

I can't read that sentence without thinking of Lord Peter's proposal to Harriet... :-/
