The history of Middle-Earth (chibi version): Part 1: In the beginning.

I've been playing around with an online chibi generator again, and conceived the rather mad idea of retelling the story of J R R Tolkien's Silmarillion using cute Japanese anime-style cartoon characters. Because I can. Those who suspect that I'm using these auto-generated characters rather than drawing them myself is because I can't, in fact, draw... are entirely correct.

I know there's a grand total of maybe one Tolkien fan on my flist, but I decided to go ahead and post these anyway. I'll try and make it a regular periodical thing, but I'll post two today since they are fairly similar in concept, and go together. I don't know how far I'll get, but I've got ideas planned out for at least as far as the Theft of the Great Jewels.

Awww, chibi Valar!

I like how Irmo and Este look like they just got out of bed. But Este is awake enough to let out a "Woo!"

I think Tolkien would have agreed that of all the Valier, Nessa was the most likely to show up in shorts and a halter top.

Glad you like them. :)

Confession: I created the male and the female chibis on different days - and I didn't actually realise/remember I'd given Nessa almost identical clothing to her husband's until I'd finished and put them all side by side. Still, I do think it works.

"She also is lithe and fleetfooted. Deer she loves... but she can outrun them, swift as an arrow with the wind in her hair." What else would she be wearing but running shoes, shorts and a sports top? :)

Do you mind if I share this on Tumblr? This kind of graphical thing goes down well there and I think there are a few fans of all Tolkien's work.

Please do. I plan to post one or two updates a week, for a while at least. Can you post the link after you do?

The two posts have been liked or reblogged by 4 people with a comment "Surprisingly, this is about right". http://mrwaterproof.tumblr.com/.

Feanorian penguins

Hurrah! Thank you.

I'm just getting to the Valar in my current writing... and this is the easiest way to remember them.

Hee! This is wonderful. Looking forward to more!

(I haven't read Tolkien but I have spent lots of time reading about Middle Earth history on Wiki, if that counts for anything? Meaning, I'm eager for this series of yours!)

Hi Emmie! Glad you're interested!

Reading the Silmarillion (and Lord of the Rings too, though for different reasons) is kind of like digging through a big heap of earth and occasionally finding a diamond: it's heavy going, but the occasional bits you find make it worth it. Or, you could just read these comics and skip the digging. :)

Yeah if you're giving me the lazy route, I'm more than happy to take it!
