The history of Middle-Earth (chibi version): Part 5: Battle of the Bands

4th February 2013 (16:33)

First, thanks to the kind person who nominated my fic Experimentation at the Willowy Goodness Awards. If you haven't read it; it's got Buffy and Willow sitting in a bar having a drunken conversation about why, given that Buffy is admittedly bicurious (see: Satsu) she's never approached Willow herself about the subject... Only 620 words. Go read! and vote!

****

Meanwhile back in Middle Earth - or technically outside it since it doesn't exist yet - the rivalry between Melkor and the other Valar is hotting up! Can anyone else see this being done as a musical?

Part 5: Battle of the Bands

Next time: Part 6: Eä!

Chibis by tektek.org
Original story by and copyright to J R R Tolkien, ed. C Tolkien: Primarily based on the Silmarillion, but incorporating ideas from the 12-volume History of Middle Earth series.
Questions and comments welcome!
For the record, the original text relating to "God's invention of close-harmony singing" is this: "Then Ilúvatar arose (...) and he lifted up his left hand, and a new theme began amid the storm, like and yet unlike to the former theme, and it gathered power and had new beauty."
Also, it's  the Sid Vicious (or Spike) version of 'My Way' Melkor is singing, not the Frank Sinatra version. Obviously.

I'm rooting for Melkor. Free will, wat up.

I presume you've worked out already that Melkor is Tolkien's equivalent of Satan? The establishment has always demonised rebellion, quite literally in this case.

Then again, Tolkien wouldn't be the first writer to make Lucifer the more sympathetic character:

Here at least
We shall be free; th'Almighty hath not built
Here for his envy, will not drive us hence:
Here we may reign secure, and in my choice
To reign is worth ambition though in Hell:
Better to reign in Hell, then serve in Heav'n.

Clearly, this is Tolkien making a metaphor for the suprression of the sacred female by traditional patriarchal christianity.

Not buying it? OK, so Melkor (who is Satan with the serial numbers filed off, who is Baal with the serial numbers filed off) is singing a French song translated by Paul Anka for Frank Sinatra and covered by the Sex Pistols.

What was Paul Anka's biggest solo hit?

A love song to an older woman named "Diana."

I rest my case.

*nods*
;)

Everybody knows there are no females, sacred or otherwise, in Tolkien's works. Except for Éowyn and Lúthien MarySúviel, who are the exceptions that prove the rule.

Chaos and Panic

Obviously. Cos if he sounded like Frank Sinatra he would have been even MORE evil...

Good point. Of course at this moment Melkor is still technically Unfallen; he's not entirely evil. Just evil-ish.

alyson hannigan young harry potter

This is a valuable public service. Literally what the term "edutainment" should have been invented for.

I like to think that if Professor Tolkien were still alive and reading this, he'd give a brief snort of amusement before resorting to really dry sarcasm to demolish my interpretation of his ideas. :)

Can you find a spider-themed chibi? Melkor needs a bass player, and since female bass players are a tradition in punk, I nominate Ungoliant.

And a trio of Balrogesses in ripped fishnets and heavy eye shadow singing backup.

(OK, now I realize I'm asking too much of the pool of publicly available chibi sprites.)

Well, I could either make a human-form Ungoliant:

Or go the clip-art route (probably best to avoid too much realism to avoid freaking out any arachnophobes in the audience):

(But darkened since Ungoliant is a spider of darkness.)

The Balrogs in fishnets are actually perfectly possible using basic chibi sprites. :)

Oooo, I like human Ungoliant. And the Balrogess rocks.

Melkor's taste in music

Melkor would probably like KMFDM, Rammstein, Combichrist, Ashbury Heights and Icon of Coil.

Parts 1-4?

Hrm. I can't seem to find parts 1-4 of your Chibi history. Do I need a secret password?

Re: Parts 1-4?

You shouldn't; they're just regular posts. Does this link work?
