The history of Middle-Earth (chibi version): Part 58: Mopping up

22nd August 2013 (18:15)

Tolkien never actually told us what Treebeard's 'real' name was, so I made one up in the style of the Entish words we do know.

It's also not exactly canon that the Ents helped guard Cuiviénen, but it's the sort of thing they're good at. Also Tolkien hadn't actually invented Ents yet when he wrote the Silmarillion, so they have to be retconned in...

.

Chorus

In one corner, the Maiar are gathered, looking on...

MELIAN: Hey, Tilion, what's that thing Yavanna's talking too?

TILION: I don't know. Maybe it's one of those Elf things that we're fighting for.

MELIAN: Do you think so?

TILION: Well, it doesn't quite fit what Oromë told me, but I can't think what else it might be.

MELIAN: Shame. I was looking forward to meeting one, but I thought they'd be a lot cuter than that.

ARIEN: Never mind cute elves. I was hoping to meet a few cute male Balrogs.

TILION: Hmmm... I wonder how many cute female Balrogs there are?

Melian backs away from them.

ARIEN AND TILION: What?

(Sorry about that. But if you're going to the trouble of foreshadowing Eönwë's later appearance, I thought I'd join in and foreshadow Arien and Tilion too, since they'll be more important to the plot and a lot sooner!)

Considering how smug Yavanna was about getting those Ents created, you'd think she'd have checked up on them earlier than this.

Heh... at first I thought Tulkas and Manwë were holding rapiers, and thinking those are kind of light weapons for a war like this... but then I realized those are the pointers for their dialogue blocks.

Yavanna must have been busy. :)

I see what you mean about the dialogue lines; I probably shouldn't have them pointing to their hands! But I've used the weapon descriptions from the Book of Lost Tales: Manwë uses a bow, as befits an air god, and Tulkas has a steel gauntlet strapped onto his right hand.

Legolas said it dammit!

Legolas "But Treebeard: that is only a rendering of Fangorn into the Common Speech; yet you seem to speak of a person. Who is this Treebeard?"

Gandalf "...Treebeard is Fangorn, the guardian of the forest; he is the oldest of the Ents..."

Re: Legolas said it dammit!

Treebeard himself tells Merry and Pippin that 'Treebeard' or 'Fangorn' are what other people call him, and saying his real name would take "a very long time".

Though it's likely that a newly-created ent would have a shorter name, since their names grow longer as they go through life.
