The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 102: Of Thingol in Doriath

20th February 2014 (14:58)

Just in case it wasn't obvious, several years pass between the top-left and bottom-right pictures in today's cartoon. :)

Poetry is Tolkien's own (from 'The Lay of Leithian') not mine. And no, I don't plan to do the entire poem in this format, it's a bit long...

Part 102: Of Thingol in Doriath

Next time: Part 103: Lúthien MarySúviel.

Chibis by tektek.org
Original story by and copyright to J R R Tolkien, ed. C Tolkien: Primarily based on the Silmarillion, but incorporating ideas from the 12-volume History of Middle Earth series.

Yay, it's Lúthien!

Though I don't think you can go much farther with the poem anyway without making a detour back to Valinor. We need a couple more generations of Noldor for the plot to make sense. But I really like the Finweans, in all their dysfunctional glory, so I'm looking forward to seeing them.

Well, the Sindar will have about 3,000 years by themselves in Beleriand until the main plot catches up with them, so my plan is to spend three or four more episodes talking about what they do there (the arrival of the Dwarves, the creation of Menegroth, etc). Also to introduce these three guys, whose chibis I just created:

But then I'll leave them and go back to pick up the story in Valinor, and follow it continuously.

Makes sense. I'm not meaning to short-change Doriath. I just get a little sad thinking about how great Menegroth is, because I know how it's going to end. I blame Tolkien for this.

Mablung, Beleg, and Daeron? I like their wreaths. (Is Mablung meant to be left-handed? I doubt I'd even notice, except thinking about Maedhros makes me conscious of it.)

That's right!

I decided to give the Sindar of Doriath those wreaths to distinguish them from the Teleri, since all these chibis can start to blur into each other after a while.

Mablung is holding the axe in his left hand, it doesn't mean he'd fight with it like that though. :)

(Actually, it's just because I usually flip the chibi in Photoshop to face left or right as needed. For Maedhros, I had to create actual separate files for the two facings, because it's important to the story which hand he holds his sword in.)
