Why do you think Nerdanel left in the end? (and according to one version of the story, she eventually shacked up with Indis instead...)

I wanted to establish early on that Fëanor's sons, not just he himself, laid claim to them. :)

And Fëanor must've just invented the idea of "heirlooms". Since elves don't normally die, they wouldn't normally need any concept of inheritance at all. (It's a sign of how much his mother's death is still weighing on his mind after all this time!)
