The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 162 - Gang colours

23rd October 2014 (13:53)

Guess which Shakespeare play I studied at school? :)

Also, today's cartoon contains an in-joke for people who know the laws of heraldry...

Fëanor's audience is all the grandchildren of Finwë, assembled together.

Part 162: Gang colours

Next time: Part 163: Resistible Rise of Fëanor

Chibis by tektek.org
Original story by and copyright to J R R Tolkien, ed. C Tolkien: Primarily based on the Silmarillion, but incorporating ideas from the 12-volume History of Middle Earth series.

At least there isn't a joke about pushing maids to the walls. Or crude obscure references to fish.

Love this!

Thanks!

Yeah, I did originally think about including more of the scene into the cartoon (or dedicating an entire one to it), but then I decided that rape jokes aren't really appropriate for this cartoon, even if they're ones written by William Shakespeare. (Though what I would actually have done is had Aredhel or Galadriel saying to Carinthir, "Try putting me to the wall and you'll lose a hand, mate.")

I'd like to see anyone even try that line with Galadriel!

There's always Three households, all alike in dignity...

ARGON: "OW! My thumb."

CARANTHIR: "Servest thou right."

ARGON: "An 'chud ha' bin zwaggered out of my life, ’twould not ha' bin zo long as ’tis by a vortnight."

CARANTHIR: "What?"

(Is the heraldic joke that all the men are carrying lozenges and the girls have square shields? Heraldic cross-dressing!)

all the men are carrying lozenges and the girls have square shields?

Almost, but it's simpler than that. What the women are carrying are, in fact, lozenges in the heraldic sense (diamond-shaped shields).

all will yet be well

Though Tolkien reversed it in his heraldry for some reason, so that the men's emblems are diamond-shaped and the women's are round. (It's not mentioned anywhere in the books that I know of, but if you find his drawings, that's what they look like.)

stabbity

Ha, I burst out laughing at the R&J reference. And poor Finrod, trying to keep the peace . . .

At least I gave Finrod Benvolio's lines instead of making him Mercutio...
