(Fic) That Kiss

7th July 2007 (03:02)

I've written a quick fic with a missing scene from 'The Long Way Home' issue #3. Buffy, Willow; 748 words; rating 12. Mostly light-hearted, unusually for me.

So. Just who did kiss Buffy awake?

That Kiss

Movie poster

"You're saying I was woken by a kiss of true love? But that's so... so Sleeping Beauty."

"Yep. But also Amy's modus operandi: that spell she cast on me back in Sunnydale got broken the same way, remember? Some dogs just never learn new tricks."

"Hmm. So you're telling me somebody in this castle loves me? As in, loves me loves me? Who is it?"

Willow looked embarrassed. "Um, I don't think - I mean, I can't - "

"It was Xander. Oh God. It was Xander, wasn't it? He's been acting strange ever since we - erm, we had that conversation about, about, um, hypothetically..." Buffy's sentence trailed off in the face of her friend's quirked eyebrow.

"Really? You and Xan?"

"No! No, of course not. That would be horrible and incestuous and wrong and OH GOD you don't know what it's like being stuck here with a hundred women and no other men for miles!"

"Dunno. Sounds like heaven to me."

Despite her self-pity Buffy couldn't stop herself smiling at Willow's wry tone. "I suppose it would be for you. Well, except that I don't know if any of the girls here are actually gay..."

"Oh, I think it's pretty safe to say that they're not all 100% hetero."

"What? You haven't been - oh! You mean that it was one of them who kissed me?"

"I'm not sayin'."

"It must have been. Since I'm actually sitting here hoping really hard that it wasn't Xander, even though it would be horribly complicated and embarrassing if one of the other Slayers had a crush on me..."

"Why?"

"What- oh! No, I don't mean it like that. It's just that, you know, I'm their leader. I'm the one who has to order them into battle. Maybe send them to their deaths. And how awful would it be if I knew that they were in love with me? Would it make me make the wrong decisions? I mean-"

"Buffy, really: no. I know you, you'll always do what you think is right, y'know?"

"Not always. I try. So anyway-" she made a conscious effort to shake off her downturned mood with an upbeat grin, "Will you tell me I'm right if I guess her name correctly? Twenty questions?"

"Nope. Wouldn't be fair. I promised I wouldn't tell anyone who she-"

"Aha! "She"! It was one of the Slayers!"

"Damn! Er, I mean, I was going to say 'she or he'..."

"No you weren't. Ner ner ner. I'm just pleased it wasn't Xander. So come on, you may as well tell me who it was now."

"No, I really can't. I promised. Um, anyway, how do you know it wasn't me?"

"What? Willow! You don't want to kiss me like that! Do you? You don't, do you?"

Willow giggled at the look on Buffy's face. "Well... not lately. Not since Anya's birthday party three years ago..."

"That was entirely the fault of that bottle of tequila and didn't I threaten to kill you horribly if you ever mentioned it ever again?"

"You can't kill me, 'cause I'm a human. Currently non-evil, too: evil-free for 28 months and counting!"

"Every rule has an exception." Buffy tried to glare threateningly, but the grin quirking the corners of her mouth rather spoiled the effect. "No, I know it wasn't you. And you say it wasn't Xander. So, hmm - let me think..."

"Are you sure you really want to know? I mean, what are you gonna do if you do? After all these years I really can't see you hoppin' the gay train, so it's not like she has a shot with you. So wouldn't it be kinder if you just, y'know, treated her the same as all the other girls?

"When did you become so wise?"

"It's kinda in the job description now. Wisewoman, y'know? And it beats the alternative."

"And you're really not going to tell me, are you?"

"I'm really not."

Buffy sighed. "I suppose you're right. As usual." She gave Willow a jaundiced look. "But you don't have to look quite so smug about it."

"Huh? No, no smug. I just had a thought." She giggled, and Buffy's eyes turned suspicious. "What?"

"Oh nothing. It's just that this time, Amy's spell needed someone to kiss you to break it, right?"

"Right..."

"So what if next time, she casts a, y'know, stronger spell on you?"

And she doubled over laughing as a dawning look of horror lit in Buffy's face...

SNERK!!!!

Stronger spell, Amy! Stronger spell!!!

Random thought--in a castle with hundreds of women--the eventual Synchronized Period Week would be AWFUL.

Thanks!

Glad you liked it! (And sorry I couldn't work in the two of them being chained together naked in a box; it didn't seem to fit the storyline...)

Booth - I enjoyed that

Yay! This is exactly what would have happened - Willow accidentially giving hints, but standing firm in not actually telling Buffy who it was so she could continue to treat the girls the same and not act weird around one of them. Very enoyable!

Thanks! (Also, Buffy dying to know who it was, but also in the end respecting Willow's determination not to have the name wheedled out of her.)

And she didn't even need to use her "resolve face"!

doomed

Oh, I loved the dialogue, it was so natural and so Buffy and Willow as we know them! Very funny!
Love it!

Thanks! It was one of those stories where the dialogue just seemed to flow naturally; it was thinking up a way to actually end the story that was hard. :-)

You do well with light-hearted. I hope there'll be more.

I like how Buffy tries to pry some informations from Willow at first.

"So what if next time, she casts a, y'know, stronger spell on you?"

And she doubled over laughing as a dawning look of horror lit in Buffy's face...
Not evôl Willow? Really? Looks like there's some tiny remainder. Snerk :D

May I ask you something about Willow? She is your favourite character in Btvs. What touches/interests you particularly about this character? I know it's not always easy to explain that sort of thing , but I always find it very interesting when someone who deeply likes a character (or a show, a book...)gives some of his hindsight about it.

willow

Thanks! And Willow wasn't being Evil, just, well, evil. :-)

What touches/interests you particularly about this character?

It's an interesting question. There are quite a few reasons, really:

She's such a complex character (have you read my essay 'Pride, not Ethics'? It's now included in my links list over there -->) and her journey and character development is so dramatic and eventful. There's a constant tension between her admirable qualities and her flaws, which could either drive her to greatness or, well, destroy the world. She'll never be mediocre.

There's probably an element of self-identification too. Willow is the intelligent but socially inept geek who had a hard time at school but blossomed at university and in adulthood - something I suspect a large part of fandom (including me) can find a certain sympathy with...

Possibly linked to that is the sheer wish-fulfilment. I'd love to have Willow's powers, even though part of me wonders if I'd mess up with them just as badly as she does... So there's a vicarious pleasure there in watching her. Plus, I think it's fascinating to write about someone who is flawed and human but has the power of a minor goddess... thinking up ways to challenge her is fun...

Plus, of course, it doesn't hurt that Alyson Hannigan is not unattractive. :-)

Thank you for your answer.
have you read my essay 'Pride, not Ethics'? Yes I had but read it again : it's a clear and brilliant report on what constitutes Willow's strengths and flaws at the same time. Will keep it in my memories.

Willow is the intelligent but socially inept geek who had a hard time at school but blossomed at university and in adulthood - something I suspect a large part of fandom (including me) can find a certain sympathy with... Yes, certainly. Especially in season 1 and 2 where she still looked alike a little girl surrounded by not so kind teenagers (to say the least). I always think with tenderness of the Willow as shown in Halloween, which is probably my favourite episode in regard to that character.

I'd love to have Willow's powers Now, that's probably the characteristic that leaves me the more indifferent, even though the questionning of power is always intellectualy very interesting.

Plus, of course, it doesn't hurt that Alyson Hannigan is not unattractive. Indeed, she is a cute woman. :) (By the way, I love your icon)

Adorable little friendship scene - plus, shades of meta in there, I think, which is always nice.

And yup, stronger spells might make Amy's return worth-while. :-)

So where's the fic of Buffy and Willow getting drunk on July 4th and making out under the fireworks?

Yep. It seemed easier to put down my thoughts on the consequences of 'that kiss' in the form of a dialogue, rather than a long, convoluted essay - and hopefully, more fun for people to read...

:-) You're the only person to comment on that little side-remark I threw into the story. Wonder why that is???

Thanks!

buffy - squee

Loved this.

Awww ... this fic and That Other Kiss left me with the hugest smile on my face tonight. They're just such wonderful interaction pieces ... I love the character voices in both of them.

You do "lighthearted" most excellently.
