The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Meanwhile, back in Tirion

13th July 2015 (21:09)

So, today's cartoons (yes, plural) are pure fanfic, so I've not given them numbers in the official sequence. We'll return to the ominous, doom-laden canonical story on Thursday. As an intermission, we go back to Tirion to see what's going on among those left behind.

Note: Findis is the eldest child of Finwë and Indis, and thus Fingolfin's older sister. Faniel is her younger sister, and semi-canonical. (Originally I had Irimë there until I was reminded she went into Exile). Nerdanel is Fëanor's wife, Anairë is Fingolfin's wife and Eärwen is Finarfin's wife. Lissiel is an original character, Nerdanel's chief handmaiden.

Meanwhile, back in Tirion

(Spoiler)

When Finarfin gets back he might be surprised to find himself demoted to figurehead constitutional monarch with a prime minister. :)

Wow, what a feast! So, elves invented democracy but decided it wasn't such a good idea. That makes sense, in its own way.

Remember my disclaimer that this is fanfic, not canon!

I actually suspect they'd just elect the person next in line to the throne anyway, so it ends up as a democratically elected monarchy. :)

The Tanist system - good old Norse tradition of the type JRRT knew all about!

Ah, the inception of democracy. Of course, the question of who qualifies to cast a ballot hasn't been addressed and I'm sure it would come up. Landowners having more than one vote? Females having the right to vote at all? And what about age? All of the things that, when enacted, allow democracy to slip through the hands of "the people" after all.

I really loved this aside :-)

I'm fairly sure Nerdanel and the others wouldn't restrict the vote to women only. :)

Property owners, i'm not so sure. I do see elves as being inherently hierarchical, and actually wanting to be ruled by royalty. (So poor Nerdanel might find herself being unanimously elected by a write-in ballot!)

What I'm imagining is something like universal suffrage for everyone over 50, but tighter restrictions on who can stand for office. Maybe even something like the Roman cursus honorum, where you only become eligible for election to senior government positions after spending a certain length of time in more junior roles. (Which makes me wonder if elves have a job for life, or if they prefer to change careers every 144 years or so...)

What a wonderful idea! Change is long overdue. :)

As long as Nerdanel's revolution doesn't involve guillotines or storming the Winter Palace...

Love it! And was it me reminding you that Irime went with Fingolfin that caused Faniel to be in this comic?
If so; yay! I helped legitimizing Faniel (for this series).

I love how the Elves invent democracy here. The absolute monarchy for the immortals is one of the aspects of Tolkien's Elves that makes less sense.
And I love Lissiel!

Yes, I think so. Since I'd already given Indis's daughters identical Generic Noldo chibis I wanted to make the joke about not being able to tell them apart, which wouldn't work if there was only one of them there.

I think elves are, as a rule (to which Fëanor is a huge exception) very conservative. If someone is good at ruling them, they see no reason to replace them just for the sake of it.

I also imagine that when Nerdanel became Crown Princess of the Noldor (by marriage) she was assigned a huge army of servants to wait on her hand and foot. Which she hated, at least until having seven children made her appreciate some help around the house. But she does still treat her servants and handmaidens as people - even friends, in Lissiel's case - not mobile furniture.

(Lissiel is actually a character from the fic I wrote about Nerdanel's first meeting with Fëanor.)

Yep, that's where I remembered her from. She was the one of the "three hens" who actually was Nerdanel's friend, wasn't she?

Also tried to look the meaning of the name up right now; "Sweet Daughter"?

That's right. My idea was that when Nerdanel was made a princess, she offered Lissiel the job of Chief Handmaiden so she'd have at least one familiar face in her new life.

And as I've mentioned before, in Dark Ages and mediaeval times, being a personal servant to royalty was considered a prestigious and high status position, not demeaning the way we might think of it. Lissiel is now a moderately high-ranking member of the nobility in her own right (hence why they address her as 'Lady' Lissiel), even though on a lower tier than the royal princesses.

I think of her name as meaning 'Daughter of grace'. -iel is a common feminine name ending in Quenya, so I suspect it's seen as being fairly generic.

We'll call it Lissielcracy!

That would mean 'rule by Lissiel', which is exactly what she doesn't want...
