The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 256 - Dispositions

27th November 2015 (14:39)

I've been busy with work which is why these have been coming slowly...

Today's cartoon has a call-back to my deutero-canonical side story about the Noldor Women left behind in Tirion. All the Silmarillion actually says here is 'There they received the pardon of the Valar, and Finarfin was set to rule the remnant of the Noldor in the Blessed Realm'.

    Part 256 Dispositions

    Next time: Part 257: North

Chibis by the now-dead website formerly known as tektek.org
Original story by and copyright to J R R Tolkien, ed. C Tolkien: Primarily based on the Silmarillion, but incorporating ideas from the 12-volume History of Middle Earth series.

I always loved Nerdanel's earthy intelligence. Constitutional monarchy - how perfect!

I always thought it was bit off-putting to read that Finarfin was 'set to rule' the Noldor, as if they didn't get a choice in the matter themselves. So I like the idea of him arriving home to discover they've changed the constitution in his absence. :)

Or that they've actually created a constitution in his absence, since in a monarchy there often isn't any constitution at all. I love your thoughts on this matter, though. It's as if Nerdanel is leading the nobles against King John and creating their own Magna Carta. LOL

    Celeborn

I do love the idea of Finarfin taking a good healthy walk every morning!

    It's good for his constitution!

"was set to rule" doesn't sound as if Finarfin was asked, either.
He probably badly needed those walks for his constitution.

True, but on the other hand, he's still a son of Finwë and a Noldo, so I suspect he wasn't too upset at being made a king.
