The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 275 - Hanging around

17th March 2016 (15:40)

The thought struck me that if you were going to make a blockbuster movie trilogy of the Silmarillion, Maedhros would make a good protagonist or POV character. He's the one non-Ainu who's involved in nearly all the major events of the First Age — often on the 'wrong' side despite him starting out as a decent guy morally speaking, which makes for a compelling character-based drama.

Anyway, I'm afraid I'm going to leave him hanging here for a while, since the next section of the cartoon will go back to Aman to see what the Valar have been up to.

Ooh, time to change my icon in Maedhros's honor!

Yeah, I could see Maedhros working as the protagonist. Though you'd still need someone else's point of view for some of the Sindar stuff and so on.

Oh yes, you'd need multiple points of view, but I think Maedhros ties it all together. I did think about having Galadriel as the female lead and alternative protagonist of the film, perhaps giving her a more important role than she had in the books - the way Arwen took Glorfindel's place in Peter Jackson's FotR movie. She and Maedhros would be friends and cousins who usually find themselves on opposite sides of political conflict.

Actually though, I think the Silmarils themselves would be the movies' protagonists. Film One would be about Fëanor making them and Morgoth stealing them; Film Two would have as its centrepiece the quest of Beren and Lúthien; and Film Three would be about Eärendil sailing West with the Silmaril to get help.

But Maedhros would at least be involved in all of these events, even if it's only him shouting at Celegorm and Curufin and telling them they're idiots for antagonising Doriath and Nargothrond (and getting on Lúthien's bad side) when he's trying to organise an alliance...

Yeah, I could see that. Where does the "Children of Hurin" and the Fall of Gondolin stuff fit in, though? Unless you're going to make each of them another movie . . .

And I agree that Maedhros probably wasn't too happy with his brothers after they got back from Nargothrond.

The Fall of Gondolin would be the climax of Act One of the third movie. :)

Act Two would be Eärendil growing up in the Havens of Sirion, the Sons of Fëanor attacking, and Elwing bringing him the Silmaril. Act Three would be the War of Wrath and the grand climax of the trilogy, and Maedhros's death.

The Children of Húrin wouldn't be in my movie trilogy. It would be a separate arthouse indie movie for people who like tales of bleak depression and suicide. I think it would be popular in Finland. ;)

#4 on the Evil Overlord list: "Shooting is not too good for my enemies."

If they ever made a movie of The Silmarillion, I figure Eärendil would be the protagonist (at least of the latter part). If only because his aerial battle against Ancalagon would be such an awesome cinematic spectacle.

They're elves. Shoot them and they just come back again in a thousand years with a new body.

Each of the three movies in my Silm trilogy would feature a battle with a giant CGI monster. :) Ungoliant in #1, Carcaroth in #2 and Ancalagon in #3.

    all will yet be well

Hey, what about Earendil fighting Ungoliant, like it says in HoMe?

    (Not an entirely serious suggestion.)

That would be something for the animated spin-off cartoon series. :)

Not Maedhros... Doom of Mandos and all. I'm not sure whether Morgoth knew about that, though.

I like your suggestions for Silmarillion movies, but honestly I would just love to see the Restlessness of the Noldor as a Game of Thrones-like Tv show ^-^

    Not enough sex and nudity...

Well we could get the nudity by rolling with the idea of Eldamar being tropical and dressing the Elves like Ancient Greeks...
The sex might be a problem, though there'd still be some of that, Feanor and Nerdanel managed seven sons after all...
