(Meme) Userpics

To all the people who've been weirded out by my last couple of posts: sorry about that. To make up for it, I thought I'd do the userpics meme. I've not done it before, and I recently uploaded userpic number 69, which is an auspicious number, so...

Pick one or more of my userpics as shown here. Post a comment naming the pic by its keyword (or even hotlink it if you're feeling clever and html-skilly). In return I'll tell you where I got the picture, why I chose it, what it means to me and if there's any funny story behind it.

Disclaimer: there might not be a funny story behind it - in fact, in most cases there won't be, because how many people have funny stories about icons, for God's sake? - and the reason I chose it might be as simple as "I realised I hadn't got a picture of that character." If you're dissatisfied with my response, feel free to ask for another. :-)

To be honest, all the centaur-talk has been amusing me. Especially mabus101's story. Heh.

And here, "surprise-innocence". I don't expect there to be much to it, but you may surprise me. :)

surprise-innocence

Centaurs have divided fandom like nothing else since the days of... uh... the Spike/Angel kiss last week.

Okay: surprise-innocence is one of the icons I made for a specific purpose at a specific time, and have almost never used since then, because it's kinda specialised. If I ever reach my userpics limit it'll be first up against the wall.

It dates back to the days of Strikethrough when LJ was banning people for posting pictures of underage people engaging in sexual activity (by which I mean the teenage characters from Harry Potter). Some people were saying that it was all the Potter fans' fault for being so disgusting, and thank goodness there was nothing in the Buffyverse on a comparable moral scale, because the idea of, say, a 17-year old having a relationship with an older man was so thoroughly disgusting.

It's not meant to be an anti-Bangel icon, in other words. More poking gentle fun at hypocrisy.

teal-deer

It's not just a deer - it's a teal deer!

Or a tl; dr. Too long; didn't read.

It's quite an awkward icon to use safely. The idea is that if I wrote a really long-winded post that went on and on and on, I'd use the teal deer icon as a preemptive "yes I know this is really long" apology.

The tricky part is that if I use it with a comment added to someone else's post, will they know I'm being ironic about my own reply or will they feel insulted because they think I mean their original post was tl; dr?

Also, I spent ages searching online to get the right RGB reference for the colour teal. :-)

Was in Paris yesterday in the Underground and had a reminder about how English accent can really be sexy, so it'll be "British-guys" for me ! ;-)

british-guys

All English accents? Including Geordie and Scouse? Anyway, you should, of course, read all my posts as if they're being spoken in an English accent. :-)

British-guys was designed to counter the vile accusations being made by Certain People, one of whom commented on this very post, that because I drink coffee instead of tea I wasn't really British. Lies and slander!

So I first made the icon with just the British flag, but then decided such a vulgar display of raw nationalism was itself unBritish. So I made it the background, and added three icons of Britishness to the foreground. Yes, I know James Marsters and Alexis Denisof are actually American. I mean their characters here.

I'm actually going to ask about your default icon/name, if that's OK. Whence, wherefore?

Posted by: StephenT (stormwreath)
Posted at: 6th July 2009 22:08 (UTC)

I was originally going to use the name 'StephenT' as my LJ name, since it was my log-in on several other forums. Unfortunately it was already taken. So after some thought I came up with 'stormwreath' instead. 'Stephen' comes from the Greek word for 'wreath' or 'crown' - στεφάνι - and my surname is a synonym for 'storm'. So I put them together and got 'wreathstorm' then decided it sounded better the other way around.

The icon is a lightning bolt - for 'storm' - rotated to the horizontal, so it kind of looks like a wreath (the type a Greek champion would be crowned with, rather than the sort you'd put on a war memorial.)

More Beer

Oh, glad I noticed that beer_good_foamy asked about your default. That was going to be mine.

But since that's taken I'll ask about "initiative".

Posted by: StephenT (stormwreath)

initiative

This is a fairly unexciting story, actually. I realised there were several people I was making posts about, but didn't have any icons of them. Giles, Riley, the cast of 'Angel'. I saw that scene and decided it would make a good generic 'The Initiative' icon that I could also use when talking about the US Government, secret illegal organisations, and so forth.

The text is from the Bob Dylan song, of course. It seemed to fit the idea of Maggie Walsh and her stable of sweaty, athletic young men standing around in homoerotic poses.

This one was fairly simple in inspiration - I didn't have a Riley icon and thought it would be useful. The screencap is from the episode where he tried to talk to Buffy about cheese, but chokes, which is why he looks so miserable

Riley isn't my favourite character, but I quite liked his story arc, and I anticipated having to defend him in any discussions that came up where I'd use this icon. Hence the preemptive "Why doesn't anyone like me?" text. :-)

So many intriguing userpics.... How about "hf-Metafandom"?

Posted by: StephenT (stormwreath)

hf-Metafandom

This one is not very interesting, I'm afraid...

The community metafandom posts regular links to interesting discussions found in other people's journals. Frequently, peolpe will go there, read the post, then add thier own comment. If they're not on the poster's own flist and threfore a stranger to them, it's polite to start the comment by saying "Here from Metafandom". The icon serves the same purpose.

The picture is Buffy from 'Earshot' when she's listening to Wesley's thoughts about Cordelia.

Oh, I'm also curious about "kennedy." I assume the picture is from one of Iyari Limon's non-BtVS roles, but which one? Not that she was ugly on Buffy, but she looks really hot here.... Or is that someone else entirely?

kennedy

It's definitely Iyari, and I got the photo from her IMDB page:
http://www.imdb.com/media/rm190225664/nm0510802

Presumably it's a publicity still of her, but I don't know when or where it was taken. The interview of her that AfterEllen did in 2006 also used the same picture.

You've guessed my reason for using this photo. :-)

I liked Riley's stry in S4 too: the decent, ordinary guy who gradually realises just how out of his depth he really is. In S5, I got the impression the writers didn't really know what to do with him; they saw he was unpopular with fans and were trying to make him edgy and interesting, but that didn't work so they got rid of him...
