(TMI Poll) Text or video? Or something else?

15th July 2009 (23:49)
Tags: ,

gabrielleabelle recently posted a poll about people's use of online porn for, and I quote, sexy solo funtimes. During the discussion, one of the old classic ideas was quoted: "Men are visual, and prefer image-based porn; women prefer text and story-based porn." In the past, I've seen that discussed and a lot of people agree with it - at least as a generalisation, obviously there will be exceptions in both directions. But now and then, a few people get angry at the idea or say it's complete nonsense

So in the spirit of scientific enquiry, here below the cut is a poll! On masturbation! I've divided it into two sections, one for men and one for women, and asked you to rate the different types of porn for how often you like to read/look at/listen to/whatever each type for purposes of getting yourself hot.

There's also a button there for you people who don't indulge in such a crude and naughty activity, but would like to answer the poll anyway as a control group.

Yes I know it's TMI, but that's what LJ is for, right? Anonymous posting is enabled if you don't want to identify yourself, the poll is 'Results viewable by creator only' and I'm not going to be looking at who ticks what, only the overall totals.

Now I just have to hope that enough men reply to form a statistically usable sample; Gabs' response rate was 90% female...

CLARIFICATION - If you tick "nearly always" that means that nearly every time you want to masturbate, this is your method of choice for getting aroused.

For reference: 'reading' is reading online smut, romance novels, medical textbooks, whatever floats your boat. 'Looking' is pictures, photos and drawings. Watching includes online clips, videos, DVDs, etc. Listening would be telephone sex lines or, I suppose, watching a video with the screen turned off. Writing is for those of you who write porn yourselves, and get off while doing it. Creating images is for the talented out there who create their own drawings or photo-manips, and likewise get off on it. Using your imagination would cover creating a fantasy scenario in your head without using any outside assistance - it could also include replaying old memories or whatever.

Both deliberate use and accidentally coming across something arousing (so to speak) both count here.
.

FYI - if you want to see the results for the opposite sex's poll, just click "submit entry" without touching any of the buttons or entering any data. It'll then show the results bars without adding you to the figures.

Heh. You're the only one who's taken the male poll so far (at least I assume that's you) SO I KNOW ABOUT YOUR PORN HABITS HAHAHAHA.

Erm. Yeah.

TBH, I was ticking more kind of like, "What gets you aroused." Because there was exactly one specific instance where I masturbated while reading a fic, and a couple where I've read something and kept the idea in mind for later. But most of the time? I'm just horny and that's all there is to it. :D I'm not a very interesting person that way.

I said I wouldn't be looking at who answered each question specifically, but I may make an exception in your case. :-p

And currently three men and four women have answered. That's surprisingly evenly balanced compared to gabrielleabelle's 90/10 ratio. Maybe she scares off all the men?

Or maybe I attract them?

But oddly, the sex ratio in replies is running at exactly 50/50 now. That's astonishing for an LJ poll...

spike

For the person who asked:

Does watching hot Buffy/Spike sex scenes count?

I'd count that as "watching it on video" unless you actually have access to a portal into the Buffyverse and are spying on them in real life. I didn't put an option for "I'm a voyeur!" because I didn't think anyone would admit to it. ;-)

BtVS:: Spuffy (Wrecked)

Ack, I put "very rarely" for video, but I didn't know Spike/Buffy scenes counted! Dammit! ;)

As for pr0nz habits, my imagination tries its best, the poor thing, but it's never as effective as actual reading material.

Posted by: StephenT (stormwreath)
Posted at: 16th July 2009 00:49 (UTC)

My imagination seems to be getting less effective as I get older, which is kind of the opposite of what I'd expect. Or maybe I'm just getting lazy...

Posted at: 16th July 2009 00:03 (UTC)

Huh, well... "what gets me hot" isn't the same question as "what do I use to masturbate," so your clarification actually confused me as to which one you were going for. :)

As I mentioned on Gabs' journal, I sometimes find smutfic arousing, but rarely ever act on it. The same goes for images and video, though I don't actually seek out that kind of porn, so I come across it less than written porn. (But I guess that right there supports the stereotype, lol.)

Posted by: StephenT (stormwreath)
Posted at: 16th July 2009 00:51 (UTC)

So did you answer for 'gets me hot' or 'use to masturbate'? (Because for me... they're pretty much the same thing. It's actually why I've never seen the point of strip clubs and the like - pay for two hours of frustrated sexual tension, yay!)

Though I suppose you mean one is a subset of the other, rather than you masturbate with things that don't get you hot. Because that would be strange. :-)

It's like it's Sex Week or something...

Okay, I appear to be an odd one for my habits. Text doesn't do much for me (and I'm still trying to figure out the mechanics of masturbating while reading something, to be honest...). Video and images, alone, are okay. But...sound! I love the sounds! Sexy noises, sexy talk, sexy voices...I'm more prone to "watching" a video, but just paying attention to the noises. Or...ya know...fantasizing and remembering sexy noises and such...

I have a very strange thing for cool sounds, though, even outside of sex. Briefly considered becoming a foley artist cause of it.

Anyway, I have no doubt you'll have significantly more women voting than men. LJ fandom is predominately female, after all. I'll be interested to see the results, though.

It's the International Day of Femslash on Saturday, apparently...

I'm still trying to figure out the mechanics of masturbating while reading something, to be honest

Display text on monitor. Remove clothing. Apply hand to crotch. Use other hand to scroll text. Wish you were ambidextrous. Change hands. Feel awkward, scroll text down, swap hands again. Repeat. Lose track of what you were reading. Experience earth-shattering orgasm. Recover. Perform any necessary cleansing activities. Re-apply clothing. Leave comment on story saying "Guh." or "That was hot!".

Easy. :-)

I love the sounds!

I always get embarrassed the neighbours will hear them through the wall, and turn the volume way down. Or wear headphones.

I have no doubt you'll have significantly more women voting than men

It's up to 13-5 now. Possibly the same five men who voted in your poll. In fact, it's possible that there are only five men on LJ in total.

Men are visual, and prefer image-based porn; women prefer text and story-based porn

I've done a fair bit of thinking on this, and have concluded that this is a facile half-truth. I would say, rather, that men are easily aroused by the physicality of someone they find attractive while women are aroused by the strength of character of someone they find attractive.

By physicality, I mean a whole range of things. There's obvious stuff that we think of as being good-lookin', of course, but there are plenty of other components: scent and mannerisms, texture of hair or skin, and so forth. I have vivid memories of the way one lover's shoulders tasted when I kissed it, of how an unrequited crush would fidget with a pen.

You can't reproduce most of that. You can reproduce a picture or a movie of someone good-lookin'.

The attraction women feel for strength of character explains the half-truth “chicks dig assholes.” Well, no, but unfortunately it is easier to have and demonstrate strength of bad character than strength of good character.

It's hard to show strength of character in a photograph. But in a story you can have a Sexy Fella demonstrating strength of character page after page.

Posted by: The One Who Isn't Chosen (gabrielleabelle)
Posted at: 16th July 2009 01:28 (UTC)

Most people respond to physicality with arousal. It's our nature. I have no source (dammit) but I recall one study that found women consistently becoming aroused by pretty much every type of porn they were shown (including animals having sex) whereas men were more...discriminating in their arousal.

When it comes to getting off, women can be just as shallow and sense-oriented as men. Don't confuse romance with masturbatory material.

Also,

half-truth “chicks dig assholes.”

Total non-truth and the equivalent of "guys dig sluts".

I wouldn't argue with that general idea. If you want to be all Evolutionary Biology about it (which I wouldn't recommend as a general rule) you could even say that men look for someone fertile to bear their children (young, healthy, big breasts, wide hips) and women look for someone supportive to look after their children (assertive, loyal, competent). As you say, men can get what they're looking for with a quick visual appreciation; women need to spend more time investigating character.

Stuff most likely to arouse me includes:
-arm muscles
-people wearing blue shirts
-knee-high boots
-kissing the back of my neck
-watching Buffy/Spike sex scenes on tv
-reading about Buffy/Faith sex scenes
-reading about characters pushing each other against walls
-reading about characters trailing fingers along bare skin
-reading about long passionate kisses
-reading about women playing with each other's hair

Stuff not likely to arouse me includes:
-eating cereal
-ironing
-stories about people demonstrating strength of character

b/f - dancing

Just to clarify, for the sake of your results naturally and nothing to do with embarrassment, I was answering the poll from the what get's me aroused angle.

So clicking *nearly always when writing about it* doesn't mean I stop writing half way through a sentence to go diddle myself. For one, reaching the daily word count would take *forever!*

[chuck] I'm freaking out!

I was ticking with the understanding that the question refers to "what gets you aroused" - but, perhaps due to being a woman and old-fashioned that way, I consider getting aroused on purpose to be masturbation, whether it leads to actual hands-on activity or not ;)

And as to my answer - reading is definitely *the* way for me to get hot and bothered on my own, and I answer "often" only because the porn needs to be written very well. If it's written according to my taste, it's "always" ;) so I guess that's equivalent to watching pictures and only finding those with 'pretty' people arousing XD

(I find the fact that I'm really stereotypically feminine that way - despite being a feminist and a lesbian - quite amusing, to be honest.)

Well, porn for gay men is apparently very much like porn for straight men, except for the genders involved. There seems to be something innate about each sex's sexuality that goes past whether they're gay or straight.

Cue debate on whether that's biological or social/cultural in origin.

This is a very "it depends" situation for me. Watching Buffy and Spike - where there are plenty of emotions running around the screen and the actors *look* into it can make me hot. Watching run of the mill porn where the men look like they are concentrating and the women either look bored or in pain? (which, IMO, is 95% of all traditional porn) Notsomuch.

Ya know, I meant to ask this when I first took the poll, but I got distracted by all the sexy talk.

How the hell did you get two polls in one entry? I've never managed to figure that out...

*fails*

Inspired guesswork. :-)

I created the poll, went to edit the post in HTML mode - and just cut and pasted the code for the poll and changed "women" to "men" for the second one.

Apparently LJ doesn't assign a poll reference number until you actually post the poll - I suspect you wouldn't be able to copy/paste it after that.

As a couple of others, my answers are to the question "what gets you aroused" rather than "what do you maturbate to".

When reading something to my erotic preference, I usually get aroused (if I'm alone and undisturbed while reading), but I've never masturbated to the written word. If so, it's afterwards, while thinking about (or possibly expand on) what I've read.
But getting hot can be quite enjoyable in and of itself. Or in other words, the journey is sometimes better than the destination. ;-)

Oh, I also had "regular" porn in mind when clicking on "watching video", had I thought about Spuffy scenes the grading had gone up one step... :-D

Reading about it and writing it are surefire ways to get me hot. My partner and I write smut for each other and with this we can live out all our fantasies when we're not physically together to actually act them out. Pictures and/or videos don't do as much for me, if anything, because they're too visual. I need to be able to imagine myself in those situations.
