The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 279 - Outpouring of grief

31st March 2016 (23:42)

How many people here killed Lisa the Plant by over-watering her?

How many know what I'm talking about? :)

The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 278 - Mooning over her

    28th March 2016 (21:49)

in dfifferent versions of the story Arien is a Maia of either Vána or Varda. I think she fits better as a follower of Varda because of the fire-light connection, though she could certainly have assisted Vána from time to time on her projects.

      The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 277 - Vána's plan

      24th March 2016 (22:42)

We last met Tilion and Arien back in #063-#064, three years ago. Vána's actions here are as described in the Book of Lost Tales.

The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 276 - Going into hiding

        21st March 2016 (16:09)

So — back to Valinor. We last saw these guys in #256, just after the Kinslaying of Alqualondë.

The reactions of Vána and Aulë here are based on the Book of Lost Tales version of the story, which I'm going to be drawing on for extra details. Aulë is mad at the Noldor because he's taken their rebellion as a personal slight against him, after all the help and training he gave them.

The hours are 'measureless' because without the Trees, there's no easy way to tell the time. :) (Though having said that, I wonder if the stars were already rising and setting once per solar day?)

The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 275 - Hanging around

          17th March 2016 (15:40)

The thought struck me that if you were going to make a blockbuster movie trilogy of the Silmarillion, Maedhros would make a good protagonist or POV character. He's the one non-Ainu who's involved in nearly all the major events of the First Age — often on the 'wrong' side despite him starting out as a decent guy morally speaking, which makes for a compelling character-based drama.

Anyway, I'm afraid I'm going to leave him hanging here for a while, since the next section of the cartoon will go back to Aman to see what the Valar have been up to.

Today's shoutout is to Alan Tudyk! (slightly paraphrased.)

The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 272 - Bereavement

                3rd March 2016 (22:55)

The book just says that 'an embassy' or 'emissaries' came from Morgoth in the hour of Fëanor's death, but it doesn't say who the emissary was. I assume it wouldn't be an orc or a Balrog, though. 'King of the World' was the title Morgoth took when he made the Iron Crown with the Silmarils in it.

                  House of Finwë deathwatch

                  2nd March 2016 (13:50)

I mentioned this earlier... situation as of HoM-e(CV) part 273.

I'm counting members by birth, not marriage (ie, Finwë's children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren); and 24 is the number who were alive when the Two Trees last bloomed.

Amrod is a Schrödinger's Fëanorian: possibly alive, possibly dead, depending on which version of the story you use. :)
