The history of Middle-Earth (chibi version): Part 18: I sang of leaves

21st March 2013 (11:01)

If just one fruit of Laurelin was as bright as the Sun, I hate to think what the entire tree would have been like...

Also, while it's well-known that the White Tree of Gondor was descended from Telperion, everyone seems to assume that there was never any copy made of Laurelin - but in that case, what was Galadriel singing about in the song I used as a title for this comic? ("and by the strand of Ilmarin there grew a golden tree (...) in Eldamar beneath the walls of Elven Tirion")?

Part 18: I sang of leaves

Next time: Part 19: A world divided.

Shiny!

I will now always associate Nienna with onions...

I wonder how anyone knew that they shone like the moon and the sun as JRRT only 'invented' those later? (I have an, almost, logical reason for that weirdness, in bits on my HD; one day I will write it all properly...)

Well, the references here to the Two Trees shining like the sun and moon are me breaking the fourth wall a little. :) In-universe, of course, it's the other way round.

We do know that the Valar had imperfect foreknowledge of future events because of their memories of the Music: so it's not impossible they saw that the sun and moon would one day arise fomr the Trees. On the other hand that does't explain why they're always taken unawares by Melkor's attacks.

Possibly only Mandos has retained an accurate memory of what is to come; and he doesn't talk about it much because he knows the other Valar always get depressed when he does...

Nienna, Vala of Onions. :) It's a running joke in Private Eye that politicians, celebrities etc keep a raw onion in their pocket, to bring out whenever they need to make an emotional, tear-filled speech about something.

Watch out for spiders!

Yay, Vána has invented the bikini. Maybe later, she and Melian will have the first pillow fight. :-)

And Irmo has invented the surfboard. I see him as kind of a mellow surfer dude, and you know what causes all those "dreams" (*ahem*) he keeps having...

So that's why my plants always die. (Everything I put in the ground withers and dies.) If spring ever comes, I'll make sure to watch "The Body" and have a good cry over them before I plant them.

No, your plants always die because you live in a frigid northern wasteland where polar bears roam the streets every winter. :)

Also, wouldn't tears be salty, and as such poison the ground rather than fertilise it? Unless you're Nienna, apparently.
