If you had to tow a full-sized island across the ocean, a Kraken would certainly come in handy.
Fun fact: in the very earliest versions of Tolkien's legendarium, dating back to 1915 or so, the island used to transport the Elves would afterwards (once the Valar had finished with it) end up as Great Britain. But that idea didn't survive in his work.

Hence the name "W(h)ales" for the region where they fastened the towlines?
