The history of Middle-Earth (chibi version): Part 89: We are sailing

16th December 2013 (14:26)

Stormy waters... to be near you... to be free!

In case of doubt, please note that these pictures are Not To Scale. :) The bit of the island that broke off was about 70 miles long according to the Silmarillion map.

Part 89: We are sailing

Next time: Part 90: Papers please.

I don't think Miriel is enjoying this experience as much as Kate Winslet did.

Oh, she's loving it! Don't be fooled by her serious expression, she always looks like that.

It's all romantic, because she and Finwë are going to be the very first Elves to conceive a child in Valinor...

"...We are sailing starry waters, to be with you, Valar, to be kinda sorta free"

Funny, I always figured Rod Stewart for a hobbit.

But he's Scottish, therefore a dwarf.

Cirdan looks very Scottish there... are you sure there's not a hint of dwarf in his background?

You mean Mahtan? Círdan's back in Beleriand, looking for Elwë.

Mahtan will be one of Aulë's most loyal followers, so clearly he's the most dwarf-like of all the Eldar! He's also canonically one of the very few Elves who had a beard - another sign of the truth!

I did wonder why Cirdan was on the floating island - but decided that, as a shipbuilder, he might well have gone there and back again before the bending of the world and I had just forgotten! Somehow I had it in my mind that he was the only bearded elf - due to it being a while since I last tackled the Silmarillion.
