The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 103: Lúthien MarySúviel

24th February 2014 (17:17)

Disclaimer: despite a certain level of snark in today's cartoon (and the next one to come) I do, in fact, like Lúthien. She's one of my favourite characters in Tolkien's work. But then again, my favourite character on 'Buffy' is late- and post-season Willow. Clearly I have a thing for ridiculously overpowered Strong Female Characters™.

Lúthien is the daughter of Elwë, who (at least in my version of the story) is the son of Enel and Enelyë; hence she's Enelyë's granddaughter.

Next time: Part 104: More Sue than mortal tongue can tell.

Actually, it's just as well she didn't inherit her mother's wings, or it would spoil a certain major part of her story...

Somewhere in HoME Tolkien even talks about how Elven society is egalitarian, with men and women equally permitted to do any job they want to do (though admittedly some occupations - such as warrior - tend to be predominantly one sex or the other).
