27th February 2014 (17:06)

Same disclaimer as Monday: I do like Lúthien, honestly I do. :)

Part 104: More Sue than mortal tongue can tell

Next time: Part 105: Beleriand.

Chibis by tektek.org
Original story by and copyright to J R R Tolkien, ed. C Tolkien: Primarily based on the Silmarillion, but incorporating ideas from the 12-volume History of Middle Earth series.
Questions and comments welcome!
Using the Mary Sue checklist on marysues - (warning, spoilers):

Story Or Series Title: The Silmarillion
Fandom: J R R Tolkien's legendarium
Culprit Author's Name: Canon character

Full Name (plus titles if any): Lúthien Tinúviel, princess of Doriath
Full Species(es): Half-elf, half-angel
Hair Color (include adjectives): Dark as the shadows of twilight
Eye Color (include adjectives): Grey as the starlit evening
Unusual Markings/Colorations: In her face was a shining light. (Not sure how literally to take this.)
Special Possessions (if any): Talking dog. Cloak of invisibility. Vampire disguise. A Silmaril.

Annoying Origin: Father is king of the Elves, mother is an angel.
Annoying Connections To Canon Characters: Is so awesome, the Sons of Fëanor dare not attack her as long as she keeps the Silmaril in her possession. Is the (great-great-etc) grandmother of both Aragorn and Arwen. Is Yavanna's niece. (Arguably - one draft of the Silmarillion says Melian was "akin to Yavanna".)
Annoying Special Abilities: Can make her hair grow a hundred metres overnight. Can make an entire castle collapse into rubble with a word. Can lull Morgoth himself to sleep by singing a lullaby. Can persuade Mandos to release souls from his keeping and allow them to return to life.
Other Annoying Traits: Makes flowers blossom around her feet as she walks.

Sample text:
But Lúthien came to the halls of Mandos, where are the appointed places of the Eldalië, beyond the mansions of the West upon the confines of the world. There those who wait sit in the shadow of their thoughts. But her beauty was more than their beauty, and her sorrow deeper than their sorrows; and she knelt before Mandos and sang to him.

The song of Lúthien before Mandos was the song most fair that ever in words was woven, and the song most sorrowful that ever the world shall hear. (...) And as she knelt before him her tears fell upon his feet like rain upon the stones; and Mandos was moved to pity, who never before was so moved, nor has been since.

Sons of Feanor dare not attack her as long as she keeps the Silmaril in her possession

One does wonder what excuse they used to justify not trying to retrieve the Silmaril from her. On the face of it their oath would seem to require at least SOME attempt. At least a formal request, if nothing else.

Well, they swore to pursue "Vala, Demon, Elf or Man", but Lúthien isn't quite any of the above, and she's more powerful than all of them...

Lúthien isn't quite any of the above

Darn those loopholes!
