The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 109: The world was young

17th March 2014 (17:24)

Today's title (and the upcoming one too) is from the song Gimli sings in Chapter II/4 of 'Fellowship of the Ring', about Durin founding Moria/Khazad-dûm.

Somewhere buried deep in 'History of Middle-earth' I found a statement that Melian was 'akin, before the world was made, unto Yavanna '. So I made them cousins. :)

Next time: Part 110: Many-pillared halls

Are those clan names directly from HoME? I don't remember hearing any of them before except the Longbeards.

Yes they are, from volume 12. It was one of the last things he ever wrote, in the late 60s, and I don't think the other names were ever used before that.

Having said that, it's a very interesting essay on Dwarven culture, society and language. Mostly language, this being Tolkien after all. But he wrote that in the late First Age/Second Age there was actually a strong alliance between the Dwarves of Durin's folk and the humans of the Anduin/Rhovanion area (the ancestors of the Rohirrim), with the Dwarves providing metal goods and stone-working services in return for the humans providing food (and mounted warriors) - this specialisation allowed the underground Dwarven cities to flourish and expand based on imported food, since you can't grow much underground. Things went bad after the rise of Sauron.
