The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 123: We regret to inform you

8th May 2014 (14:12)

It's another sad one today, I'm afraid. :(

Canon says that Fëanor devised the Elven alphabet "in his youth" but Tolkien probably didn't mean when he was quite this young...  There may be a small prize for anyone who can translate the tengwar on the scroll! Though I can't guarantee that what I wrote bears anything more than the most passing resemblance to correct Quenya grammar or vocabulary. ;)

vanimelda = term of endearment, literally 'beautiful beloved'.

Next time: Part 124: Noontide of Valinor

They should have put her in a glass coffin, like Snow White. :-(

ETA: I think the writing says:
Tengwar of Fëanor
Curufinwë Fëanáro Finwion

...and I'm not sure about the last line. "Our tongue" or "Our Language," maybe?

The coffin would probably have to wait for Fëanor to invent glass, or something. He probably did that too.

You've got the first line right. The second is actually Curufinello Fëanárollo Finwion, which if my Quenya is right is the ablative case, meaning "By Curufinwë Fëanáro, son of Finwë".

I'll see if anyone gets the last line, which is even more obscure...

Adam fierce

I saw a link to this on fanficrants and have just been catching up—such an awesome project! It is a long, long time since I read The Silmarillion, but I remember the confusion... seeing the maps is most helpful, and adorable little Elves, Valar etc make it much easier to remember what is going on. If Melkor only had blue eyes, he'd be a miniature Adam Lambert. Hmm.

When I fist started reading your post I nearly panicked - "People are ranting about me? Why?!" then I carried on reading and saw it wasn't bad news after all. :)

Glad you're enjoying them!
