The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 154 - Holy, holy, holy

4th September 2014 (17:36)

I remember once seeing a trivia question, "Which of Tolkien's characters has physically touched a Silmaril?" There was some debate over whether Varda would have held them in her hands to hallow them, as shown here, or if she could have done it remotely.

Interestingly, in the earliest drafts of the Silmarillion it was Manwë who hallowed them and Varda who made the prophecy that in the published book Námo gives.

Varda touched a Silmaril if you believe Bilbo. It says in the "Lay of Eärendil" that the Silmaril was set on the mast "by Elbereth herself." Though it's not like Bilbo was there, so who knows.

Ooh. Thanks, I didn't know about that one.

The two unsolved questions are, did Fëanor let anyone else touch them, back in Valinor before he became jealous and possessive of them? And did Morgoth make his own Iron Crown, or did he have people to do that for him (Possibly Sauron, even, since he was a Maia of Aulë)?
