The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 154 - Holy, holy, holy

4th September 2014 (17:36)

I remember once seeing a trivia question, "Which of Tolkien's characters has physically touched a Silmaril?" There was some debate over whether Varda would have held them in her hands to hallow them, as shown here, or if she could have done it remotely.

Interestingly, in the earliest drafts of the Silmarillion it was Manwë who hallowed them and Varda who made the prophecy that in the published book Námo gives.

Námo: "They hold the Fates of Arda, earth, sea and air, locked within them."

Fëanor: *blink* ... "I am awesome!"

Who were the "mortals" Varda was referring to? Men still haven't awakened... orcs are technically immortal... is she just prejudiced against dwarves?

The Valar know about Men. They haven't told the Elves about them yet, though, which is about to cause a problem.
