Do you want Melkor to start his sentences with 'La, sir' as well?

Elves' concern for inheritance is rather odd - presumably Tolkien was simply basing it on the themes of Anglo-Saxon literature, despite its inappropriateness. I'm working on the assumption that immortal Elves might like a change of scenery now and again, so it's conceivable that after 4000 years of being King of the Noldor Finwë might chose to give the crown to his son and go off to do something else for a few millennia. There's not really many other ways to explain it.
