The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 195 - Scene of the crime

12th March 2015 (13:17)

Melkor gets a new name! Though apparently in Quenya (which Fëanor was actually speaking, of course) it was originally 'Moringotto', not Morgoth. Which makes him sound like a character from an Italian fairy story. :)

Part 195: Scene of the crime

Next time: Part 196: Reunited

Original story by and copyright to J R R Tolkien, ed. C Tolkien: Primarily based on the Silmarillion, but incorporating ideas from the 12-volume History of Middle Earth series.

It does doesn't it? Or an ice-cream...

I was just thinking that.

"Yeah, I'll have one scoop of cassata, one stracciatella, one moringotto... Yeah, the black one, what is it, licorice?"

It's the ice cream of EVIL! Evil flavour.

I tried liquorice-flavoured gelato…

…it was yummy ^_^ and for bonus points, my wife and daughter didn't like it, so I ate the lot!

Heh... "Moringotto" sounds more Commedia dell'Arte than evil. I'm glad Tolkien wasn't so compulsive that he retained even silly-sounding names because of philological correctness.

"Morgoth" sounds nice and dark-lordish. It would be just like Melkor to embrace it proudly (though I don't know if his opinion of it was ever recorded in the books).

I guess Manwë used up all his allotted phone calls to Iluvatar.

I have a sneaking suspicion that more often that he would admit, Tolkien invented a good name first, and only then back-tracked to justify/work out what it should mean in an Elvish language afterwards...

(Though he'd often then change his mind multiple times, give the same name to different characters, etc.)

Logically, characters like Gothmog and Sauron - and from the opposite perspective, Melian and the people of Doriath too - should call him 'Melkor' still; but I'm trying to think of a justification for them calling him Morgoth.

sad

I know -- Moringotto sounds too silly. It's hard for me to take it seriously.

Though it's not the worst name Tolkien came up with in his day...

writing

I'm really glad that I prefer Celeborn as Sindarin anyway so I never, ever have to worry about the name Teleporno.

"In his later years Teleporno spent most of his free time on the Internet"

On television, surely?

(Subscription-only channels, naturally)
