The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 197 - And it feels so good

19th March 2015 (20:35)

Oh the complexities you get yourself into when you try and reconcile the existence of an immortal race of beings with strict Roman Catholic doctrines on divorce...

Obviously when Tolkien wrote that Nerdanel went to live with Indis after leaving Fëanor he didn't mean it that way. Probably not, anyway. :)

As a reminder, Vairë is the wife of Námo, and thus the Lady of Mandos. She's also a lot more approachable than her husband.

Man, I always had this impression of Finwe's defining characteristic being the ability to love others unconditionally and stick with them no matter what (his "divorce" from Miriel aside)
You capture this here really well.
Also Nerdanel/Indis. I can live with that! Also once hear a theory of Finarfin/Earwen/Anaire after

I've seen him criticised for how ready he was to abandon Indis, after all the fuss that he made wanting to marry her in the first place. I do think he's motivated by concern for other people, though (including his son), rather than selfishness.
