Confession: I'm kind of playing fast and loose with Fëanor's age in these cartoons to suit the storyline (he's at least 130 solar years old by now - or 13 Valinorean years - but I'm depicting him here as a teenager). Then again, Tolkien kept on changing his mind about how old Fëanor was at the time of these events, so I'm in good company.
In The Two Towers, Gandalf says this to Pippin about the Palantír:
"Then it was not made" - Pippin hesitated - "by the Enemy?"
"No," said Gandalf. "Nor by Saruman. It is beyond his art, and beyond Sauron's too. The palantíri came from beyond Westernesse, from Eldamar, The Noldor made them. Fëanor himself, maybe, wrought them, in days so long ago that the time cannot be measured in years."
Here we find out the truth of that! :)
