(Meta) Who's that girl?

11th July 2007 (22:03)

...running around with you? Tell me...

So. The preview cover of season 8 #7 is up, and Faith's Galatea impersonation is causing some head-scratching among people who didn't recognise her in the picture. So I went and looked for pictures of Eliza DoolittleDushku in a similar pose, re-coloured them to match, and put them side by side for you to make up your own mind.

So. Good likeness or hopelessly unalike?

Personally, I'd say the drawing's nose is a little too sharp, the neck's too long (but that's fairly standard artistic licence when painting women in that sort of dress), and her torso has clearly been magically enhanced (ditto - and given this is the Buffyverse, possibly canonically true as well). But overall, a pretty decent likeness.

(Though I still prefer Jo Chen's other Faith cover - see icon.)

(And yes, my repetition of the word 'so' is a deliberate affectation copied from S8 Buffy.)

I thought the artist got Giles quite well. But the faith is just really really awful looks nothing like her at all.1 & 3 are beautiful 2 is a hag.

Mind you I didn't like Chen's Faith either:-)

On the other hand, the one on the right doesn't look much like Faith either... :-)

True :-) But the one on the left is how I hoped Xander would see her:-)

At least that is the picture in my minds eye when I am visualizing Faith during certain scenes in my fic.:-)

She looks older in the drawing, her expression is more assured. I realised it was Faith after one take pretty much but partly from having seen the previous cover, she absolutely looks like that Faith after a makeover. Also for all the talk about enhancements I think there's a lot good corsetry can do in that direction. Just think Vamp!Willow.

You're right about the older part - good point. As for corsetry, the problem is that unlike Vamp!Willow, Faith still needs to breathe... (unless Slayers can hold their breath for hours? ;-) )

The smirk pretty much sealed it for me. How can anyone see that and NOT think "Faith"?

It was mostly the lips and eyebrows that gave it away for me...

buffy try it (effinfine)

Not hopelessly unalike, no. But really I only realized it was her by the dimple. I'm going over it now and trying to figure out WHY it doesn't look like her to me, and I can't put my finger on it, because the eyebrows and little details are right, but it just doesn't look like Faith ... and BTW that's how I feel about the artwork on Xander, too. The art depicts one really good-looking guy who I somehow can't recognize as Xander, even when I see it right next to a photo and can see the matching details.

I don't know why this is. It kind of bothers me that I can't pin it down. Grumble.

I figured it out last night. It looks like her head stuck on someone elses body and then painted over. A bad photoshop job

Feels very flat to me, lacking depth ,like a cardboard cutout stuck in a Giles scene. The face has that squashed rotated look you get when you rotate the plane imho.

If you're talking about the cover picture of Xander, I can't say I had that problem; it looks exactly like him for me. As for Faith, we know the artist can draw her really well - I think partof the problem is deliberately trying to make her look different.

For that matter, sometimes candid photos of real-life actors without their usual make-up, hair-styling and so forth can look almost unrecognisable...

I was thinking of your icons when I posted that! Love them, by the way.

I don't know what it is. The cover this one's from, Buffy looks *exactly* right to me, and Willow looks like herself too. I would recognize them anywhere. But if I weren't told this was Xander, or didn't see the artwork in the context of BtVS, I wouldn't recognize him. I ought to ~ that's why it nags at me. Though I do think this one is a better likeness than the other.

I love your Xander icons. :-)

The other one looks more like him to me than this one. I like the artwork a lot ~ it's just that it bothers me that I would never recognize it as him if it weren't for the context!

I recognized her quickly, I've started to think that people just like to think negetivally about anything that is the comics.

I won't say this is my favorite cover, it's pretty though, but nothing tops that Buffy, Xander and Willow one so far. :)

Oh yeah ... the Buffy, Xander, and Willow cover was purely awesome. I wish Jo Chen did the interior artwork as well, rather than just the covers!

I know what you mean - but I've a suspicion that it will take her about as long to do a single full-size cover painting as it takes the interior artist to do 12 pages of normal line work...

Chen is brilliant at portraiture but telling a story in pictures is a different art form, I don't think it's just the time factor that keeps her on the covers. Jeanty seems to take a little while to get into the swing of a character, he's emphatically not a great portrait painter but I think he does have a good line in drawing expressive faces, movement and composition. It shows in his two good covers, the jigsaw puzzle one for issue 3 and the "Your country needs YOU" poster one for five both of them tell stories rather than showcasing particular characters.
