The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 217: Rebel rebel

1st June 2015 (18:26)

So after following the events in Middle-earth with Morgoth and the Sindar for a while, it's time to return to Aman to take up the story with the Valar and the elves there.

If you remember back in #195, Fëanor had just learned that his father Finwë, high king of the Noldor, had been murdered by Morgoth, and he rushed off distraught into the night. His sons went after him, worried about what he might do. We can assume they were missing for some time...

Also, note that Fëanor is still officially banished from Tirion by the law of the Valar, because he drew a sword on his (half-) brother.

Characters appearing in today's cartoon: Nienna, Aulë, Yavanna, Ingwë, Olórin, dead Telperion, dead Laurelin, Indis, Manwë, Varda, Ilmarë, Eönwë, Fingolfin, Finarfin, Turgon, Generic Noldië #1, Aegnor, Generic Noldo #1, Ambarussa x2, Celegorm, Caranthir. Curufin, Maedhros, Maglor, Fëanor, Aredhel, Fingon, Generic Noldor #2 and #3, Finrod, Generic Noldië #2, Galadriel.

Yay, we're back to the Noldor! Not that I don't like the Sindar, but Noldor being over-dramatic and making bad decisions are my favorite parts.

There's going to be plenty of drama and bad decisions coming up! :)

And we are also back to that annoying tendency Tolkien often has in regard to the Elves in the Silmarillion that they act like absolute sheeple. All the Noldor went to Tirion and All the Vanyar stayed with the Valar by the corpses of the two trees and All the Teleri are in Alqualonde doing Teleri things, nobody went anywhere else or with a tribe that *gasp* wasn't theirs.

And I know it's probably a result of the compressed nature of the stories, but when I first read the Sil that blind pack mentality annoyed the heck out of me and the annoyance never went away...

However the debate that will probably span the next comics is one of my favourite parts.

Also; Yay Ilmare! She doesn't get enough attention in the Sil!

The thing is, that's actually not true as soon as you look at the details. Finarfin's wife is Teleri, Turgon's wife is Vanyar, as is Finrod's girlfriend. Galadriel's husband is possibly Teleri, though I'm making him Sindar in this version. I assume they weren't particularly unique, and there were plenty more people who mingled or even intermarried with the other kindreds.

It might be that in this time of trauma and catastrophe the kindreds drew in on themselves, though.

Looks like Ilmarë was out clubbing when all this happened.

Is she holding hands with Eönwë?

Ilmarë's dress is sky-blue with sparkles like stars, in honour of Varda's greatest work. And Eönwë is her brother, so if they're holding hands it's purely for comfort!
