The History of Middle-earth (chibi version) - Part 228 - Last light

9th July 2015 (17:14)

I wonder if the 'slender beam' of the light on the top of the Mindon Eldaliéva rotates?

The bottom group of elves includes some that I don't think we've seen before. From left to right, Finarfin, Finrod Felagund, Orodreth (Angrod's son), Aredhel, Argon, Angrod, Elenwë (Turgon's wife), Turgon, Aegnor, Galadriel, Fingon, Fingolfin.

To tell them apart: Fingolfin and his children wear predominantly blue and white (which are my 'Vanyar' colours, in honour of Indis), except Aredhel and Turgon who are both noted in the book as wearing all-white. (But I added blue highlights anyway). Finarfin and his sons wear 'Noldor' green, but have blond hair. Galadriel wears a different colour because she's a rebel. Orodreth wears the same colours as his father and uncles, but I gave him dark hair (in canon, I don't think his hair is ever mentioned) to distinguish him. Elenwë is wearing Vanya colours under her warm coat.

All Finwë's sons and grandchildren (and two great-grandchildren), together in the same cartoon...

Orodreth doesn't look happy.

And Elenwë is the only one who's dressed for cold weather. Cruel irony.

Orodreth had a pretty miserable life, all things considered.

Alternatively he could be grumpy because he's the only one on his side of the family with boring black hair.

Love this thought. It's silly enough that the tower was built and almost immediately abandoned to the Noldor, but the entire idea that the tower held a rotating light like a lighthouse just made me laugh so darned hard, it sent me into a coughing fit. Yeah - love that idea ... he, he, he ...

"No, Fëanor, you can't weaponise the light. I don't even know what a 'laser beam' is. And who would you want to attack, anyway?"

Aw, Celebrimbor. I'm always happy to see my favorite show up. It's nice to see Orodreth make his appearance too! (I have a sneaking affection for him because he gets left out so often.) Agreed that he doesn't look happy. And poor Elenwe. At least she's dressed for the occasion.

I suppose if one doesn't know the story, that arrow showing their progress toward Alqualonde doesn't seem ominous . . .

I've noticed what might be a continuity error? A couple panels back, Turgon said Elenwe is pregnant. I was assuming the baby would be Idril (though I feel bad for Elenwe, if she's going to give birth in the middle of a Kinslaying or on the Ice!) but then I thought I remembered Idril being mentioned earlier. I tracked it down, because I'm compulsive like that: it's in Part 156 (http://stormwreath.livejournal.com/184187.html). Though given the number of times Tolkien changed his mind about things like Gil-galad's parentage, I feel I can't really object.

My thoughts too...

You're right about Idril. Akk. Put it this way, though: it's not really practical to cross the Ice barefoot, so Idril must have been young enough to still be carried...

I also just noticed that Elenwë is, as far as we know, the one and only full-blooded Vanya to leave Valinor. I assume she's really, really stubborn. :)

You are right, Orodreth's hair colour is never mentioned. Just don't forget that Finduilas, his daughter, is mentioned as having golden hair (and reminding Turin of his sister because of it...ewww)

Hmm. I haven't made a Finduilas chibi. Based on this, maybe I should re-use the Nienor one I have made, just in different clothing. ;)
