Well, that would explain how the whole mess got started -- if Feanor *truly* believed that one of his sons had been killed by the Teleri...

As I see it, Fëanor at this stage is driven, angry, more than a little unstable, but still not the sort of person to commit willful murder without provocation. (Though it didn't take much provocation; if he'd paused for even a moment he'd have realised that Amrod was probably okay).

(And of course, canon only says that after the Teleri started pushing the Noldor into the water, "swords were drawn". Not by whom or specifically why.)
