    The destruction of the trees and creation of Sun and Moon are a strange point in the History of Middle Earth

    Was it in part divine judgement, since the vala had come to neglect the rest of the world? When I first read it many years ago, I thought so...

    That's actually explicit in the Book of Lost Tales version.
