(Meme) Talking to yourself...

21st August 2008 (13:57)

Inspired by the last fic I wrote, I thought this would make a good meme or plot-bunny for other people to have a go with.

Suppose that your favourite character (or least favourite) from the final season of the show got sent back in time to the first season of the show, and met themselves.  What would they say to their earlier incarnation? What warnings or advice would they give? What questions would their younger self most want to ask? For that matter, what would each version of the character think of the other? Would they be surprised, shocked, pleased, disappointed, proud, ashamed, flabbergasted?

My own answers to this, dealing with Buffy, are here. Although I took the approach that I wanted to stay canon-compliant (or, in the story, future!Buffy didn't want to change her own past by being too obvious about her warnings and advice) so she was cryptic and elliptical. I'd be interested to see what other people come up with!

I think my brain would melt if I tried, and I don't want to get distracted (six pages to go!), but I'd love it if someone wrote this with Andrew.

Spike goes back to not technically the first season but the earliest point of his timeline

Spike looked critically at his curly-haired, puppy-eyed human self. What should he tell him? Probably best to avoid him getting vamped. As much fun as Spike had had over the years, he couldn't exactly let the kid turn into a mass murderer. But he could toughen him up a bit.

The young man gazed back at him in wonder.

"Listen, mate. Few words of advice."

"Yes? I mean...ruffian, how dare you!"

Spike growled. "Shut up you little ponce."

The young man did so. Spike raised one hand, fingers splayed, to count off his points.

"So, advice for life. One...get your hair cut. You look like a bloody sheep. Two...give up on Cecily. She's not only a bitch, but possibly a demon."

"She's an angel!"

Spike gave him a warning glare. He hemmed and looked down.

"Three...four...and five...don't go down any dark alleys with women of ill repute in 'em...grow some balls...and move out of your bloody Mum's house."

"But where shall I go?" The young man looked distressed.

"Think of somewhere. How about New York?" Spike lit a cigarette. "Just not California. Fucking hellhole."

Both funny and in character. :-) Thanks!

willow (first day)

You know, my problem is that I'm fiercely canon-compliant, and I don't want them to do anything differently to what they already did. (Plus, if things start getting done differently, it could have disastrous consequences.)

So really, with characters who'd want to give their earlier selves lots of advice, I wouldn't want to give them the chance. And the characters who wouldn't give lots of advice, um, wouldn't...

I did rather love the way you had Buffy handle it. That was well done!

I take your point; I had the same problem, really. It might have to be more along the lines of "This is what s/he wanted to say, and this is what s/he actually said..."

You weren't joking about the disastrous consequences, were you? :-) (And I laughed at your 'The Wish' drabble...)

There was a challange done by Woflie in the sadly dead Buffyworld forums and I did a Xander ficlet, here's the link :)

Great story! Although sadly leaving lots of unanswered questions. Any chance of a sequel? :-) Mostly, was that epilogue with Major Harris set in the equivalent of Season 4, 7 or two years after 7?

Thank you :) Glad you enjoyed. I wasn't able to put explainations because the challange had word-limit. So I left it for fans to imagine :)
