(Meme) Music quiz

I've never done a music meme before, but I'm bored, so... :-)

These are twenty of my top-rated songs from my iTunes player, set to shuffle. Can you guess the song title (and artist, if possible) from the first two lines? (If the first two lines contain the song title, I've skipped to the start of the next verse or chorus instead.) Curiously, and purely by coincidence, not one but two of the songs that came up are Buffy-related in some way...

My brother is banned from replying to this quiz because he knows my musical taste too well and would probably be able to identify all of them immediately. :-)

ETA: 14 gone, six to go. Here's a clue: of those groups or singers remaining, two are English, three are from Ireland and one is from the USA.

1. England 1936; the grip of the Sabbath day. In London town the only sound is a whisper in an alleyway.
2. And I know that time goes on and things must change and all things pass away. But it's a dark and scary world out there, and nothing's on TV.
3. I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song, I'm twenty-two now but I won't be for long.

4. Old Afrikaaner farmer on the terrace of his home, sits gently in his rocking chair and gazes at this land he owns.
5. They told me tales of love and glory, same old sad song, same old story.
6. I haven't ever really found a place that I call home; I never stick around quite long enough to make it.
7. Underneath your dream-lit eyes, shades of sleep have driven you away.
8. When I met you in the restaurant, you could tell I was no debutante.
9. All the things you said to me today changed my perspective in every way.
10. I remember it; Dublin in a rainstorm at night. Sitting in the long grass in the summer, keeping warm.

11. It's such a drag to want something sometime. One thing leads to another, I know.
12. Take me now, baby, here as I am. Hold me close, try and understand.
13. Something isn't right; I don't know how I know. Baby, it's despite your dog-and-pony show.
14. I kicked in his door at 5.00 am. "I've come for my bike", I told the repo man.
15. I touch the fire and it freezes me; I look into it and it's black.
16. Dressed like that you must be living in a different world, and your mother doesn't know why you can't look like all the other girls.
17. Oh, watching the people get lairy; it's not very pretty, I tell thee.

18. Tell me what's gone wrong. I tilt my head there under the faucet, when I turn it on - dry as paper.
19. Reborn and shivering, spat out on new terrain. Unsure, unconvincing.
20. Éist le mo chroí, go brónach a choích. Tá mé cailte gan tú's do bhean cheile.

(Yes I admit it, I looked up the lyrics of that last one to get the spelling correct. *g*)

ETA - songs already guessed are in italics.

#3 "I don't want to change the world, I'm not looking for New England." Kirsty MacColl?
#15 Buffy Musical, Walk through the Fire, whole cast.

15 is right.

3 - sort of right. You've got the title, and Kirsty McCall did do a cover of the song, but it's not actually the version I've got myself (I've got the original).

2. "I miss Buffy the Vampire Slayer". Ashamed to say I don't remember the singer's name right now.
3. Either Billy Bragg's (or Kirsty MacColl's) "A New England" or Simon & Garfunkel's "Leaves That Are Green"
7. Eurythmics, "When Tomorrow Comes"
8. Blondie, "Sunday Girl"
12. Patti Smith (or Bruce Springsteen), "Because The Night"
14. Michelle Shocked, "Come A Long Way" (YAY! I thought I was the only person in the world who remembered that one!)
15. Duh. :-)

Isn't 13 the other Buffy-related song: Aimee Mann's "Going through the Motions"?

Posted by: StephenT (stormwreath)
Posted at: 18th March 2009 14:39 (UTC)

You've got the title and artist right. \o/

Is it Buffy related, though? (The song she sings in 'Sleeper' is Pavlov's Bell, not Going Through The Motions.) The two I had in mind are #2 and #15.

Wow, the only one I recognize is the Buffy soundtrack. I am old and out of touch.

See reply above; about half those songs date back to the late 70s/early 80s... ;-) (Although exactly half of them are by British or Irish singers, so may be more obscure to an international audience...)

#6 is "Life for Rent" by Dido.

Aaaand... I think that's it for me. :-/

(I did know the original Simon & Garfunkel version of "Leaves That Are Green" though.)

Posted at: 18th March 2009 15:56 (UTC)

Correct!

(To be honest, I knew that Billy Bragg stole the opening line of 'A New England' from Simon and Garfunkel, but I didn't know which particular song until now...)

No I can't.
I can get 3, 8, 10, 11, 12, 15, 16, and 17 with no trouble but I'm struggling with the rest

Oh? Okay. :-)

Though I have to say that #5 and #18 are both groups you first introduced me to...

Hmm

I though all the ones I knew were already guessed - until I got to 17 - I have a daughter who was into the Kaiser Chiefs in a big way, and this looks to me as if it is from 'I predict a riot' - am I right?

And I know that 20 isn't by Runrig becuase if it is I'd recognise it!

Posted at: 19th March 2009 00:20 (UTC)

Yes, you're right on 17, and no, the one in Irish Gaelic isn't by Runrig. :-)

Number 11 is Talk of the Town.

And there be Pouges here, but I can't remember the name of the song! This is going to bother meeee!

Posted by: StephenT (stormwreath)
Posted at: 19th March 2009 09:41 (UTC)

Correct! (by the Pretenders). As for the Pogues, see the comment below yours. :-)

Quite right!

I cheated and googled the rest and found out I couldn't have known. (Except for the Undertones song, I saw them live for god's sake..)

'The Undertones' was the (...thinks...) second album I ever bought (Kate Bush's 'The Kick Inside' was the first).

Dammit, how did I miss the Pretenders one? I know that song.

Is #18 Natalie Merchant by any chance? Or 10,000 Maniacs?

Posted by: StephenT (stormwreath)
Posted at: 19th March 2009 13:41 (UTC)

Well spotted; it is indeed 10,000 Maniacs. But do you know the song title? :-)
