(Poll) Hair colour

2nd February 2010 (21:06)
Tags: , ,

Partially inspired by angearia 's rant post about eye colour, here's a poll on hair colour... Please note, I'm asking about the CHARACTER, not the actor! What's canon, for you?

Poll #1520405 Hair Colour

Is Buffy a natural blonde?

Yes.
10(8.5%)
Kind of; but she uses bleach to lighten her hair further.
72(61.5%)
No, she's a brunette who bleaches her hair.
31(26.5%)
I'm a special snowflake.
4(3.4%)

Is Willow a natural redhead?

Yes.
64(54.7%)
Kind of; but she uses colouring to tint her hair further.
43(36.8%)
No, she's a brunette who tints her hair.
8(6.8%)
No, *I'm* a special snowflake!
2(1.7%)

LOL by killmebecomeme

Not many polls make me laugh out loud. You, sir, are to be congratulated! :)

:-)
(Answer #4 to question 2 did have me envisaging a crowd of LJ posters all standing up and yelling "No, *I'm* a special snowflake!" one after the other...)

I think the colourists made a fortune out of the Buffy cast.

Didn't FOX actually tell Joss, after the first episode, to colour-code his lead actresses so people could tell them apart? (Buffy's the blonde, Willow's the redhead, Cordelia's the brunette)?

Buffy is a brunette; thing is, she used to be a blonde when she was a kid so she's clung to that haircolor. (That's how I was as a kid, too, and now I'm uber-brunette.)

Willow is a natural redhead, but she prounounces it even further with dye.

And of course Spike isn't a natural platinum blonde. ;)

So actually, you're basing Buffy on yourself? ;-)

Same here, in fact. I always thing of myself as blond because that's what I was as a child, but I occasionally see myself in a mirror and think my hair looks way too dark...

As for Willow, I tend to think of her as a natural redhead mostly because dyeing her hair, at least in the early days, would be too dangerously adventurous, not to mention conforming to the patriarchal stereotype of feminine attractiveness. She started using colour in seasons 4 - 6, though.

And in S8, her hair is naturally red because she wants it to be naturally red. No dye required. ;-)

I am stunned - nay, positively distressed - to think that Spike may bleach his hair...

Of course he doesn't. In 'Fool For Love' and the other flashbacks he was wearing a wig...

Is Buffy a natural blonde?

She has dishwater blonde hair as we see in Bargaining when she's fresh out of the grave. She gets highlights to lighten it.

Is Willow a natural redhead?

She has dull reddish-brownish hair (especially noticeable in S1), but she colors it a brighter red later on in the show.

Is Spike's hair naturally platinum blonde?

Would have to see the carpet to be certain...

You mean you didn't see those S6 outtakes then?
*grins evilly*

Personally, my fanwank is that she has bright red hair, but her mother persuaded her to colour it dull reddish-brown early on as a protest against the Beauty Myth. :-)

Spike dyes his hair?

Posted by: StephenT (stormwreath)
Posted at: 2nd February 2010 23:10 (UTC)

Well, either that or it's magic, like Willow in 'Chosen'.

Posted by: Beer Good (beer_good_foamy)
Posted at: 2nd February 2010 22:22 (UTC)

I'm going to say that Buffy is essentially blonde (though not as bright as she wants people to think) and Willow is essentially red (though not as bright as she eventually wants people to think) and that anything in s1 that contradicts that is simply a result of low-budget badly lit 16mm film. :-) And that flashback in "Killed By Death" is clearly Buffy's subjective memory of being young and not yet able to afford hair dye, so she looks more rat-coloured than she really was.

As for Spike, he dyed so many years ago.

I agree with those earlier who said Buffy lightens her hair because it got darker as she grew older and she still thinks of herself as a blonde, pretty much because that's my experience (though I'm too lazy to actually dye my hair).

I just think of Willow as a natural red head. No reason other than that's what makes sense to me.

...And you mean Spike's hair isn't naturally that blonde!?

Posted by: StephenT (stormwreath)
Posted at: 2nd February 2010 23:14 (UTC)

As regards Willow, I'm influenced by the idea that she just doesn't seem like the sort of person to want to dye her hair... unless Buffy convinced her to do it, maybe, or when she was in her "radioactively self-confident" phase in S5/S6.

Spike dyes his hair because if he didn't, it would magically reset itself overnight until it was exactly like it was the day William Pratt died. The bleach retards that process.

Heh.

It never occurs to me that anyone has dyed their hair unless it's a radically unnatural color. Buffy's and Willow's hair both look fairly normal, so to me that's their natural color. I only realized that Spike's hair wasn't natural for certain when I saw it undyed.

'Course, my own hair does wacky things--it used to be bright red and curly. It lost the curls first, then slowly faded to a vaguely-strawberry blond. But my facial hair is still bright red.

Now, what exactly do you anglo-saxon people mean with "brunette"?
Real black like Trinity in The Matrix? Dark brown like John Frusciante? Chestnut brown like SMG in some of her youthful pics?
(I took Strawberry Blonde 101 but I'm still confused about Dishwater Blonde. Platinum I know!)
I found this poll very stimulating, I can feel braincells multiplying as I type...:)

Personally, this Anglo-Saxon uses "brunette" to mean "brown-haired"; nothing more specific than that...

That wasn't Buffy, though. It was an actress named Sarah Michelle Gellar, who looks a little bit like Buffy but isn't a Slayer. :-)
